Two years ago, we endorsed Rep. Steve Chabot's opponent in the Ohio 1st District congressional race, saying that the Westwood Republican incumbent's effectiveness in Washington seemed "to have peaked."
Evidently, Chabot took that as a personal challenge to, as we put it, "pick up the pace" when he returned to Congress after defeating Democrat John Cranley. We believe he's succeeded.
Chabot seems to have been invigorated, ironically, by his party's loss of majority status in the 2006 election, going to one of his long-time strengths - an ability to find common ground with Democrats on initiatives that may not make big news, but do make a difference.
For that reason, we endorse Chabot for re-election over his talented, capable challenger this fall, Democrat Steve Driehaus.
