Obamnesty

On January 20th, 2009, Senator Barack Obama placed his left hand on a Bible, raised his right hand, and swore an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of this nation, and thus became President Barack Obama. Three and a half years later, he is desperately trying to hold onto that office. And he is apparently willing to say or do just about anything to attain that goal.

Case in point – immigration. It’s no secret that the Obama campaign is concerned that Hispanics may not support him to the degree that they did in his last election. And they are a key constituency in a number of swing states.

The worry is that Hispanics feel that Obama promised them a great deal to gain their support in the ’08 campaign, but hasn’t delivered. Obama was the guy who would push to loosen immigration laws. And for the first two years of his Presidency, Democrats controlled Congress, the House and the Senate, and what did they do about immigration? Nothing. They were too busy pushing through the Stimulus, and Obamacare, and gays in the military.

Besides, even many Democrats in Congress were worried that if they loosened immigration laws, and pushed for any version of amnesty, they’d be punished at the polls. So nothing happened.

And of course everyone understood that in order to change immigration law, Congress had to pass legislation, and the President could either sign it, or veto it. That’s the way it works. It’s right in the Constitution.

In fact, when President Obama was speaking to La Raza (a pro-amnesty group) back on July 25, 2011, he defensively stated, “I know some people want me to bypass Congress, and change the laws on my own… but that’s not how our system works, that’s not how our democracy functions, that’s not how our Constitution is written.”

And he was right. But last Friday, in a truly stunning announcement, he now tells us that despite what he said back then, the Constitution be damned, he’s just going to act on his own.

He is instructing federal immigration law enforcement agents to no longer enforce our immigration law, at least as it applies to 2-3 million illegal immigrants. The press has been repeating the Obama Administration’s talking points that the number is 800,000 but closer study reveals that 2-3 million is more accurate.

Since these illegal immigrants would be given work permits in the United States, it’s logical to conclude that it would make it that much tougher for millions of unemployed Americans to find jobs in this weak economy. So much for this Administration’s claims that it is doing everything possible to put Americans back to work.

The bottom line is, in my opinion, Barack Obama is pandering to a constituency he wants desperately to vote for him this November. He is willing to break the oath he swore to when inaugurated. He is completely reversing what he earlier said, and exercising powers that he’s stated he did not have. He is making an end-run around the duly elected representatives of the American people (the Congress), and he is acting in an unconstitutional manner.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that this President has acted in this manner; but it is, in my opinion, the most egregious. Other examples of this President instructing federal employees not to enforce the law are his refusal to enforce DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), medical marijuana laws, and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, to name but a few.

It’s hard to come to any conclusion but that we have an arrogant, election-driven, cynical man occupying the White House in our nation’s capital. A house in which there is a plaque hanging in the State Dining Room containing the words of our second President, John Adams, which reads as follows: “I pray Heaven to bestow the best blessing on this House, and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men rule under this roof.”

Unless of course Barack Obama has taken it down.
